The Iron County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for employment for the position of jailer, part-time to be followed by full time. SUMMARY: Guards prisoners in jail, assuming responsibility for all needs of prisoners during detention by performing the following duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
I. Locks prisoners in cell after searching for weapons, valuables, or drugs.
II. Serves meals to prisoners and provides or obtains medical aid if needed.
III. Prepares arrest records identifying prisoner and charge assigned.
IV. Questions prisoners about medical conditions and general health.
V. Escorts prisoners within the facility (ie. to and from visiting rooms, recreation yard and medical offices).
VI. Controls entrance of jail and screens visitors to jail.
VII. Distributes commissary items purchased by prisoners such as personal hygiene items, and records delivery on vouchers.
VIII. Books prisoners into the jail, after receiving them from arresting officers.
IX. Photographs and fingerprints prisoners during booking.
X. Documents, and places booked prisoner personal into property bags/tubs (ie. clothing, jewelry and money).
XI. Controls unruly or combative prisoners with verbal and/or physical force if required.
XII. Any additional duties as prescribed by the Sheriff. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
